Tofino’s waters, known as the Clayoquot Sound, are one of the best locations in the world for a whale tour as the waters are rich with food. In fact, the whales gain over 30 percent of their body weight while feeding in our waters! Typically these are the types of whales you’d be most likely to spot on one of our Tofino whale watching tours.

 Whale Tours Tofino: Wildlife

Pacific Gray Whales — each spring, approximately 25,000 Pacific Gray Whales migrate from their wintering grounds of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula to feed in Tofino’s waters before heading north to Alaska. These gentle giants are a common sight from March until late October.

Humpback Whales — This species of whales migrate to Tofino from Hawaii and Mexico. These enormous, majestic whales are fond of breaching and watching them shatter the surface of the water is a truly unforgettable sight.

Transient Orcas (Killer Whales) — Transient orcas are mammal hunters and are found patrolling along the coast and far out to sea to find their prey. The transient orcas are found in Tofino’s waters all year round and are a spectacle to witness in the wild.

On one of our whale watching tours, the Captain and crew will take you to view various other wildlife including:

  • Steller Sea Lions
  • California Sea Lions
  • Harbour Porpoise
  • Seals
  • Sea Otters
  • Bald Eagles
  • Tufted Puffins
This tour can be an Accessible Tour, please note this requirement when booking the tour.
