This guide will help you prepare for your whale watching trip, ensuring you make the most of your time on the water and cherish every moment of this unforgettable journey.

Essential Clothing for Comfort and Function

Layers for Variable Weather

When preparing for a whale watching tour in Tofino, dressing in layers is key to staying comfortable amid our region’s ever-changing weather. The west coast of Vancouver Island is famous for its unpredictable climate, where clear skies can quickly turn into windy rainstorms.

Start with base layers made from merino wool or quick-dry synthetic materials—steer clear of cotton as it retains water and can make you feel chilly.

Add a fleece jacket as your mid-layer to keep warm. This versatile layer can be easily adjusted by adding or removing as the temperature shifts.

These layers ensure you remain comfortable throughout your tour, no matter the weather.

Waterproof and Windproof Outerwear

Bringing a waterproof and windproof outer layer is essential to protect yourself from the elements. We highly recommend a lightweight, waterproof Gore-Tex shell. It’s breathable, easy to pack, and layers nicely over your fleece. If you do not have a jacket, we do provide guests with a complimentary rubber jacket. These will keep your body warm and dry.

This outer layer will keep you dry and shield you from the wind, enhancing your whale watching experience.

Additionally, wear long pants made from sturdy, wind-resistant fabrics like denim or Gore-Tex. Avoid skirts, dresses, shorts, and other lightweight options that won’t offer sufficient protection against the wind.

Protective Accessories

Don’t forget the accessories that keep you warm and safe. Warm gloves and a thick, woolly hat protect your hands and head from the cold and wind. Skip the baseball caps or plan to wear them backwards – as they tend to go for a swim!

Opt for closed-toe shoes with a good grip to prevent slipping on the boat’s deck. Rubber boots or waterproof walking shoes are perfect choices, keeping your feet dry and providing stability.

Avoid sandals, Crocs, and flip-flops, as they work but it’s best to cover your toes so they don’t get too cold.

Must-Have Equipment for Whale Watching

Binoculars

Binoculars are a must for our bear watching tours. They let you look closer at the bears and other wildlife without disturbing them. A quality pair of binoculars can significantly enhance your viewing experience; we rent them in our office in case you forget your pair!

Choose binoculars that are waterproof and offer excellent optical clarity for sharp, clear images.

Camera with Extra Batteries

Capture the unforgettable moments of your whale watching adventure with a reliable camera. Bring one that can take high-quality photos, even in varying light conditions.

Don’t forget to pack extra batteries, as cold weather and frequent use can drain your camera’s power quickly. Additionally, you might want some extra memory cards, because the extraordinary wildlife viewing opportunities’ll blow you away. Waterproof or dry bags are also a brilliant addition to protecting your camera from the elements.

Seasickness Medication

If you’re prone to seasickness, it’s a good idea to bring some medication along and also plan to take any medication 30 minutes before departing. The waters around Tofino can get choppy, especially at certain times of the year, and seasickness could dampen your experience. Take the medication as directed before your tour to stay comfortable and enjoy the ride.

Our team can also offer advice or recommendations for managing seasickness if you need it. For other alternatives to dealing with motion sickness we suggest Ginger candies, raw ginger, peppermint (gum or sucker); alcohol wipes if you smell them often help your sickness a lot.

Additional Items to Enhance Your Experience

Snacks and Hydration

Keep your energy up and stay hydrated during your whale watching tour by bringing the right snacks and drinks. Light, energy-packed snacks like nuts, dried fruits, or energy bars are perfect.

Avoid messy or greasy foods that might be hard to handle on the boat. A refillable water bottle is a must, as staying hydrated is essential, especially in the fresh sea air. You can refill your water bottle inside our office prior to and after your tour if needed.

Tofino is committed to reducing single-use plastics, so we appreciate the use of reusable water bottles. We ask that all guests eat snacks on the outer decks before boarding.

Sunscreen and Lip Balm

Even on overcast days, the sun reflecting off the water can be intense. Protect your skin by bringing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF and applying it regularly during the tour. Don’t forget lip balm with SPF to shield your lips from the sun and wind. We have sunscreen available in our office if you forget to pack yours.

This helps prevent sunburn and keeps you comfortable throughout your adventure.

Waterproof Bags

A waterproof or dry bag is essential for keeping your electronic devices and valuables safe from the elements. However, West Coast Aquatics has cabins to keep your stuff dry.  If you plan to take photos or videos, a waterproof bag ensures your camera or phone stays dry.

Conclusion

As you prepare for your whale watching adventure in Tofino, make sure to pack essential clothing layers, windproof outerwear, and protective accessories to stay comfortable. By being well-prepared, you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery and incredible wildlife of Vancouver Island.
