Wildlife Videos

February 23rd, 2012

Tofino is full of so many incredible things to see, hear, smell and feel. Over the years many of these things have been caught on video. I have chosen this short clip from one of our past Bear Watching tours. This trip was aboard NANUQ, our 36 passenger catamaran and the voice you here is from Naturalist, Diana Lukinuk. We have seen so hundreds of our past guests capture footage on their phones and camaeras and are hoping that you will share them with our future guests and followers through our blog.

A Perfect Tofino Day!

February 18th, 2012

Photo from dinnerwithjulie.com

Having been in Tofino for six years now I have seen some 60 feet or so of rain (according to our annual averages), witnessed some of the worlds best surfers in competitions such as Queen of the Peak and O’neill Cold Water Classic and sampled some of the most incredible cuisine in Canada if not North America from some of our local culinary masters.  Here a some of my local tips for the perfect Tofino day!

Welcome Home Surf Sisters!

February 15th, 2012

We would like to welcome back our friends and local superstar surfers at Surf Sisters by reposting the blog from their site.  This is a sure sign that spring is around the corner when the “Sisters” are back in town!

Home Sweet Home!!!

We’re back!! Stoked, tanned and refreshed!!

After 5 weeks of traveling I’ve got to admit that it feels great to be at home….and a little chilly. Our trip began with 13  Surf sisters in Balian, Bali where we rented out a gorgeous vacation rental house owned by one of our Surf Sister alumni, Jenny. Jenny’s house was gorgeous (see our facebook page for photos) and the waves in Balian were a blast! Super fun, consistent and not crowded (except for us!). After two weeks we split into two groups, one group bound straight for Lakey Peak in Sumbawa and the other without a game plan.

NANUQ Provides Access for All

West Coast Aquatic Safaris has always been focused on providing the best experience to everyone.  This has been evident through the design of the vessels being specifically for wildlife viewing.  As we mature as a company and have taken the knowledge gained from previous years experience, support from the Accessible Wilderness Society and there has been even further thought put towards the more recent addition to the fleet.Family Friend

SeaWorld Sued Over ‘Enslaved’ Killer Whales

February 7th, 2012

Have you ever been to SeaWorld, the Zoo or any other type of animal show?  Have you swam with Dolphins in a tank or had any chance to view people that have.  As always West Coast Aqautic Safaris is scanning the news for important or related stories to what we love.  Today we came across this piece from BBC News.

Five killer whales have been named as plaintiffs in a lawsuit which argues they deserve the same constitutional protection from slavery as humans.

Taking Care of Our Oceans and Wildlife

February 4th, 2012

We hate to think that we are in any way responsible for the injury of any wild animals of even worse the elimination of a species. Even if we are not directly responsible we see things on a daily basis that greatly effect the lives of creatures on land, in the sea and in the air.  When you travel with West Coast Aquatic Safaris, you will see us haul garbage out of the water, report injured or tangled wildlife to the local task force that has formed to help free such creatures and respect the established guidelines for safe wildlife viewing even when it means the view won’t be as stellar.  We take our responsibility seriously as wildlife viewing tour operators and do not want to see things such as the story in the link below continue.

While West Coast Aquatic Safaris continues preparing for the season we are simultaneously looking for more stories from around the world that we find interesting and think you will enjoy as well.  Today we share with you a piece about Dolphins that learn to speak in whale song.

We have always know Dolphins to be very clever and they have been the subject of great study.  It is fascinating to see that there is still lots to learn and that they continue to impress and entertain themselves as well as us.

Whale advocates sue Navy over sonar exercises

January 26th, 2012

NANUQ with Grey Whales

Over the past couple of years we have heard comments from captains from various companies state that they felt military air exercises have perhaps scared off the Humpback Whales or that Humpbacks had not been spotted for several weeks coinsiding with a period when there has been training going on.  This article on “Whale advocates sue Navy over sonar exercises” is and interesting one that we felt was worth passing on.

If you have experience with this from either standpoint we would be very curious to hear your thoughts after having a read.  Thanks to CBSnews.com for posting the article and to all those that share an opinion with West Coast Aquatic Safaris!
