Tofino’s waters, known as the Clayoquot Sound, is the best whale watching location in the world as the waters are rich with food. In fact, the whales gain over 30 percent of their body weight while feeding in our waters!
Pacific Gray Whales — each spring, approximately 25,000 Pacific Gray Whales migrate from their wintering grounds of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula to feed in Tofino’s waters before heading north to Alaska. These gentle giants are a common sight from March until late October.
Humpback Whales — This species of whales migrate to Tofino from Hawaii and Mexico. These enormous, majestic whales are fond of breaching and watching them shattering the surface of the water is a truly unforgettable sight.
Transient Orcas (Killer Whales) — Transient orcas are mammal hunters and are found patrolling along the coast and far out to sea to find their prey. The transient orcas are found in Tofino’s waters all year round and are a spectacle to witness in the wild.
