Ecotour Safety First

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

West Coast Aquatic Safaris is proud to offer one of the great marine experiences on the west coast. We will take you to find multiple species of whales along the coast, cruise the tranquil inlets in search of Black bears foraging for a meal, and take you to one of the most spectacular Hot Springs that Canada has to offer.

What we are most proud of though, is the fact that we are fully Transport Canada Safety Certified and that the design of our vessels, and the fact that we exceed safety expectations, allows us to have all ages travel with us. This maintains piece of mind for families that we value, and a safe experience over simply, an experience.

NANUQ on dry land for inspections

Throughout the winter months, West Coast Aquatic Safaris takes both of its tour boats out the water to give them a rest, a good tune-up and a fresh coat of paint. Although WASCO usually only stays dry for about a month, we often wait a little longer to put NANUQ back in the water. The time came to ease the 36-passenger catamaran back via the 4th Street Dock last week, and it was my first time experiencing such a site. Due to the shear size of NANUQ, this event can often be a bit of a tricky one. This year, however, it all went off without a hitch… and here’s how it looked.

Safe Boating!

Friday, February 24th, 2012

When it comes to choosing who you and your family are going to travel with on the water, the same amount of consideration should be taken as if you were going to fly.  There are many things to consider such as comfort, safety, training and certification and of coarse the best possible view!

From the first day of it’s creation, West Coast Aquatic Safaris has been designed and operated by Owner Keith Phillips with safety, comfort and value as it’s priorities.  Each Vessel, WASCO and NANUQ have been built to meet or exceed all Transport Canada Safety regulations and we continue to consult with TC on what new technology and training will be most valuable for the future.

NANUQ Provides Access for All

West Coast Aquatic Safaris has always been focused on providing the best experience to everyone.  This has been evident through the design of the vessels being specifically for wildlife viewing.  As we mature as a company and have taken the knowledge gained from previous years experience, support from the Accessible Wilderness Society and there has been even further thought put towards the more recent addition to the fleet.Family Friend

We’ve Got You Covered, Literally

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

It may not come as a surprise to you that Tofino has changeable weather with the reputation of being less then ideal. Although this is not entirely true, we do live in a temperate rainforest and sometimes our wild west coast likes to keep us on our toes! What you may not know is that we are well aware of our unpredictable weather and we wouldn’t want it to keep you indoors on your vacation, so we are ready for it! How can we possibly prepare ourselves for this you ask? Well, NANUQ and WASCO have both been specially designed not only for wildlife viewing, but also for wildlife viewing on our wild west coast! Both of our first class vessels have the option of indoor and outdoor seating, making it possible to have the option of being comfortable inside our warm heated cabin, or outside taking advantage of the outdoor seating on the fly deck, or soaking up the sunshine on our large outdoor viewing decks! So while you’re on vacation if the weather happens to take a turn for the worst don’t let it get you down, we’ve got you covered rain or shine!

Designed With The Pacific Rim In Mind

Tofino and the Long Beach area is about as west as you can in get in Canada.  It is surrounded by an amazing temperate rainforest.  After knowing these few facts it is safe to assume that it inhibits beautiful waves, a plethora of wildlife, and well, precipitation.  As a charter company that embraces Long Beach, Tofino and the west coast, West Coast Aquatic Safaris decided to welcome the areas characteristics and work with it.  West Coast Aquatic Safaris had its first boat, WASCO built to work in this environment.  WASCO has heated and dry inside seating for all, but still delivers great wildlife viewing by providing an outdoor walk around deck and seating on it roof.  These outdoor spaces allow for guests to move around while out at sea and to have optimum wildlife viewing.  Not to mention it has a restroom on board and experienced captains with extensive wildlife and historical knowledge.  WASCO set a new standard of charter vessel for the Long Beach area.  Two years latter it was decided by West Coast Aquatic Safaris that there was a need for other like vessels.  However, this time it was felt that a 36 passenger vessel named NANUQ with like characteristics to WASCO would do the trick.  NANUQ still embraces the west coast by having three outdoor viewing decks, inside heated seating for all, an upper deck with outdoor seating, a restroom, and maintains a 1 to 12 ration of passengers to crew, but NANUQ was designed with twin halls!  The twin hall catamaran style allows for more stability out at sea, but maintains the high speeds while cruising.

The Return of Nanuq

Friday, May 27th, 2011

As May swiftly disappears, I’m amazed to find that another winter season has faded away, with summer’s excitement nipping at its heels.  Grey, humpback, and orca whales are already busily feeding off our coastline, and clumsily adorable baby black bears are emerging from the forest to explore the seafood treats revealed at low tide.

With the return and re-awakening of local wildlife, comes the anticipation of another familiar presence on the water.  Our ultra-fast, exceedingly comfortable 36-passenger catamaran Nanuq has spent most of the winter away, getting a slight facelift to make her even more efficient in the local conditions.  She is currently receiving the finishing touches, and will be returning to Tofino shortly, to join Wasco in running tours for West Coast Aquatic Safaris.

First-Class Vessels, Private Charters

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

The season is off to a great start. There have been many Grey Whales to see as the migration from Baja to Alaska has began. We have been very fortunate already and had the pleasure of several visits from the transient Orcas as well. In the last week we have now had a couple of Humpback whales make their way through on route out of Maui. Our weather has been dramatic and the scenery even more so but interest has been better than ever.

First Class Comfort

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

West Coast Aquatic Safaris has done everything possible to take the comfort of you and your family into consideration. With years of experience in adventure tours and boat operations, Keith has carefully designed each vessel to offer the most smooth, safe, comfortable ride. At the same time he has worked hard to ensure that our vessels maintain the maximum maneuverability, speed when desired and the best view possible on the west coast.

Our Friends Say Bye For Now To NANUQ

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

We have come to the point in the season where it was time for NANUQ to slip out of the water for the next couple of months.  It has been a couple of days now since the good folks at All Tow Boat Moving Services helped NANUQ out of the ocean and up on blocks at her winter resting place.  While NANUQ is taking a break for a while, WASCO is still working overtime to keep up with all of the Grey whales that are still spending time with us.  There has been plenty to see in the last few days with many Greys each day as well as large groups of Sea Otters as well.
